Clarity of Ruby Gemstones

Ruby stone or the Manik stone is one of the most precious members of the gem family. A red variety of the mineral corundum, ruby is extremely durable with a hardness that ranks 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness, which makes it a great long-lasting choice. The stunning pink to blood-red hues of this gemstone can even beat diamonds.

The ruby gemstone is also known for its mystical powers and the benefits that it provides to the wearers as it is the gemstone of the Sun.

Now, let’s discuss clarity of ruby gemstones. The clarity of any gem is determined by two characteristics – inclusions and blemishes. While inclusions mean that the gemstone is natural, too many inclusions may deteriorate its value. On the other hand, a blemish is something that affects the surface of the gem.

Inclusions found in Ruby

The ruby inclusions are as follows:

  • Cavities – These are holes that extend to the surface of the gemstone
  • Chips – These are broken pieces on ruby’s girdle or culet
  • Color Zoning – This means irregular color distribution within the stone
  • Cracks – These are feather-like elements
  • Crystals – These are solid inclusions inside the ruby
  • Fingerprints – Akin to human fingerprints, these inclusions are pretty common in a ruby
  • Halos – These typically are circular fractures around the crystal
  • Needles – These are long, needle-like, thin inclusions of crystals, or gas/liquid filled tubes
  • Silk – Silk-like fine fibers of minerals
  • Twinning – This occurs when two crystals grow out of each other

Preferred Inclusions in Ruby

While clear, pure rubies are in great demand. Fascinatingly, there are certain types of inclusions that increase the value of a ruby stone. From silk inclusions to rutile needles there are many preferred elements in this stone. Rutiles, as a matter of fact, create a rare occurrence called asterism, wherein three or six ray stars are visible inside the ruby when seen under a certain light setting.

Blemishes on Ruby Surface

Abrasions – These are rough scrapings on the edges of the stone
Nicks – These are broken pieces of ruby’s girdle or facet
Pits – These are small holes on the surface
Scratches – These are lines on ruby

Transparency of a Ruby stone

In order to demand a good value, a ruby stone must have good transparency. Transparent rubies can make one look clear and right through them. These have remarkable brilliance, irrespective of the inclusions that these may have. These are much high priced than semi-opaque or opaque rubies.
