Ruby and its origin

The word originates from the Latin word ‘Red’ and can be widely found in Kenya, Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, Russia, Madagascar, Mexico, and the USA. Ruby belongs to the corundum family and other members of the family are called sapphires. It is also found in different colors too.

There is also a variety known as the ‘Star Ruby’, which exhibits asterism. A six-rayed star that shimmers over the surface of the stone when it is moved; this effect is exhibited because of the needle-like rutile inclusions. In fact, it is futile which gives the ruby its silky shine. While it is the red form of corundum, all other color variants are referred to as sapphire.

The Natural ruby gemstone can differ in color. It can vary from pinkish red to orange or even brownish red, depending on their iron or chromium content. The most looked-for color is ‘pigeon red’. In fact, large rubies are considered to be more precious than diamonds of comparable size.

Ruby is the official birthstone for those who are born in the month of July. It may also be used to celebrate the 15th or the 40th anniversaries.

Star Ruby-clarity and luster

Transparent ruby is always favored, but star-ruby actually acquires its Asterism from the Rutile insertions while it remains opaque, with slight translucency. Inclusions are, therefore, not always indicative of low quality.

How star rubies are cut

Natural star ruby gemstones are cut in such a way that then gets highlighted. They are classically cut en cabochon with very high domes to maximize Asterism. Large star rubies are considered to be rare because the most common are pear-shaped and oval rubies.

Most of the star rubies are native cut, which is common for most cat’s eye and star gemstones. The cutting involves keeping an uneven bottom in order to properly orient and display the best Asterism effect.

Star rubies are usually treated with heat. Generally, before the stones are cut, the rubies are heated between 1700 to 1800 degree Celsius for several hours. Heating often improves the color and the clarity of the rubies.

It must be mentioned here that fracture-filling treatments for star rubies are now becoming more and more common in the gem market.
